What Taman U-Thant is like

Taman U-Thant was developed in the 1960s and named after the United Nations secretary-general of the day. It sits beside Jalan Ampang, with many embassies and high commissions around it, and is a prestigious and largely low-rise pocket of Kuala Lumpur. Most of its homes are luxury bungalows with large gardens, lived in by diplomats, ambassadors, wealthy local families, embassy staff and other expatriates.

Building here is held low. The land is zoned residential at a low density with a height limit and no high-rises, so new schemes have tended to be very large low-rise apartments and small gated estates: one landed project of 54 gated homes was priced from RM1,158 psf in 2016 and bought mostly by Malaysians. Two well-known international schools, Sayfol and Fairview, are named in the area.

Getting around is by car, from Jalan Tun Razak through Jalan Ampang and Jalan Ampang Hilir. Ampang Park is the nearest rail station, and traffic was described as constantly congested in 2016 despite good highway access.

A change is coming: in April 2026 a developer agreed to pay RM86.04 million for 7,613 square metres of freehold residential land here for a high-rise luxury development, with a preliminary gross development value of about RM700 million. Detailed plans are not yet set.
