What Ampang Hilir is like
Ampang Hilir is a residential enclave close to the city centre, on and around Embassy Row, the stretch of Jalan Ampang lined with embassies and high commissions. It has long been an address for diplomats, expatriate families and foreign business people, alongside local families who either lived here before or work in the city. A residents survey of one older, low-density condominium found foreigners making up nine in ten of its occupants, and buyers across the Jalan Ampang side are still a mix of foreigners and locals.

The International School of Kuala Lumpur moved to a purpose-built campus here, about ten hectares, which opened in 2019, and Sayfol and Fairview international schools are named close by. Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir is the lake park in the enclave, and Great Eastern Mall and a handful of restaurants are nearby. The housing is a mix of older low-density condominiums, bungalows and larger, newer towers.
Getting around is mostly by car. By road the city centre is five to ten minutes away depending on traffic, but the enclave's own roads double as a cut-through towards Ampang and are normally congested at peak hours. Rail is at the edges: Jelatek LRT station is about a kilometre from one condominium here, so most households drive or take a short ride to a station.
The enclave is slowly densifying. Old bungalows on large plots have been giving way to high-density projects, and there is plenty of new supply: one scheme of five 38-storey towers and 1,099 homes, launched in 2008, still had hundreds of unsold units offered in a block sale in early 2026.
